Music: Refuge, Solace & Inspiration

◼︎MIND, BODY & SOUL

YouTube is filled with incredible music inspired by the crisis we’re all enduring together, most of it created in lockdown and quarantine. A lot of the music is funny — audio memes — and some of it is poignant. All of it is uplifting!

“Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness.”Maya Angelou

Music is fundamental and essential to the human spirit. The World Economic Forum looked at this a few days ago, asking “Why do we turn to music in times of crisis?”

“The ability of music to increase social cohesion and direct human attention was probably a key reason for its development throughout human behavioural evolution, allowing early humans to convey emotions and intentions effectively. This communication could prove decisive in times of stress, and ultimately mean the difference between life and death.”

The article contains several good video clips of the music inspired by the crisis. Check it out.

“Where words leave off, music begins.”Heinrich Heine

The videos below are a sampling of the music I’ve found and shared to friends on Facebook. I thought I’d do so here as well.

This first video was posted to Facebook on March 23 by Dr. Elvis Francois at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

In this next video, Marsh family in Faversham, Kent, United Kingdom, performs ‘One Day More’ from Les Misérables.

Mirko and Valerio, twin brothers in lockdown in Agrigento, Sicily, perform Coldplay’s ‘Viva La Vida.’

The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra

Graham Nash offers advice & encouragement for all of us facing the crisis and performs a few favorite classics from Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

Joan Baez performs ‘Hello in There’ for John Prine who at this posting is sick with COVID-19, pneumonia in both lungs, and on a ventilator.

And finally, I’ve saved these two for last:
