A Gift & A Nod from the Gods

Today is David’s and my 10th wedding anniversary. We married in a small, intimate ceremony in New York City’s Central Park. It was glorious! A beautiful event on a perfect sunny day in one of our favorite places on the planet.

Check out the pictures and our story here.

The wedding was the highlight of my life, but what followed a few years later is astounding. There seems little doubt the gods are smiling down on us.

I used to help out a political group occasionally by checking a space they rented in one of those long garage-style self-storage facilities. I’d stop by to make sure no one had broken in or that the roof hadn’t leaked. It was pouring cats and dogs one afternoon as I stopped by for an inspection. Everything checked out okay, so I headed back home.

About halfway, I suddenly realized my wedding ring was missing off my finger. I was horrified! I pulled off the interstate into a restaurant parking lot and searched the car frantically. I looked on the floor, under mats, under the seats, and in every little crack or crevice there. Nothing. Apparently it had slipped off in the rain.

I drove back to the storage facility. It was still pouring. I started searching the ground. To make matters worse, the storage unit faced a small woods. It was fall. There were lots of puddles and leaves on the ground. I looked all along the edge of the drive and woods, then expanded my search several garage bays in both directions.I searched inside the storage unit too. Nothing. I was devastated.

This was a Sunday. The office was closed. I called the next day it was clear and sunny. I asked a woman in the office there if she wouldn’t mind going out to look. Perhaps she’d have better luck. She agreed.

She called me back a few hours later. My heart sank as she started describing her search. She said she looked all around, going 5 or 6 storage units in each direction and scoured the edge of the woods. She looked for almost a half-hour until finally giving up.

Then walking back to the office, she said she felt a sudden urge to try again. Something strong was telling her to go back. “Check again!” it said. So she did. This time, she walked clear to the far edge of the storage building to another line of trees at the corner. There was a slight downward slope from where I had worked to that end.

She stopped, picked up a leaf — and there was the ring hiding underneath!

This aerial image shows where I had been (X) and where she found the ring. It sure rolled a long way! I never even considered looking that far, and neither did she — until forces or a consciousness unknown led her back again, right to that distant leaf!

I’ll leave you to draw your own conclusions, but sometimes I think there’s more going on around us than we see or know.

What I do know is that I was eternally grateful. I went back to retrieve it and left the staff there with the best bakery treats I could find. It hardly seemed adequate.
