The days are flying by. It’s now just 15 days until David and I land in Beijing to begin our Great Wall Journey. We’ll be visiting the Great Wall from end to end, but we can’t claim we’ll walk the entire 3,842 kilometers — that’s almost 2400 miles! That was actually done by the people hosting us, the Lindesay Family: William, Wu Qi and sons Jimmy and Tommy.

I’m sure David and I will do some walking, but given the length of the Wall we’ll also be traveling to locations by car and air.

Walking the Great Wall

William walked the Great Wall in 1987. His sons followed in his literal footsteps in 2022, walking and jogging. Jimmy and Tommy documented this achievement in 22 stunning HD videos. You can find them all here in my blog.

Last year Jimmy and Tommy posted a compilation of their 22 videos covering highlights of their entire journey. And here it is:

The YouTube video thumbnail (above) shows Tommy as he and his brother visited the Yin family during their 2022 journey. The Yins are pictured with Tommy at the top of this post above the title. They played a very important role in William’s Great Wall journey.

Back in 1987 as he walked the Great Wall, the Yins sheltered their father William for three days during a severe blizzard. William was a tall unknown foreigner who just showed up out of nowhere, yet the Yins opened their home to him. William and his sons have been back to visit several times — and perhaps David and I will visit them too.

In this excerpt from the brothers’ video, Tommy tells the story of the Yin family. He shows how William photographed the Yin’s children in 1987 and again in 2016 on a return visit.
