Beautiful Holden Arboretum

Two years ago David and I spent a truly delightful day at Holden Arboretum in Kirtland, Ohio, east of Cleveland. It was a beautiful, clear and crisp Sunday afternoon in October. I wasn’t retired yet and was swamped in work, so I never compiled and posted this blog entry. Better late than never!

Apple Maps

If you haven’t been there, Holden Arboretum is a treasure. A Trail & Garden Map on their website shows how much there is to see and do there. The arboretum occupies over 3,600 acres with over 21,000 plants and plant groupings. Its work focuses on conservation, research and providing thousands of visitors a year with a chance to actively engage with nature.

We started our visit at the Corning Visitor Center and then walked the grounds. Two features we enjoyed especially were the Murch Canopy Walk and the Kalberer Emergent Tower.

I’ve got videos below and each image can be clicked to enlarge.

Murch Canopy Walk

The Canopy Walk is a 500-foot-long elevated walkway rising to 65 feet above the forest floor. It provides a great perspective.

Kalberer Emergent Tower

The Emergent Tower rises about 12 stories above the forest floor — that’s 120 feet or 202 stair steps. There’s no elevator. Amazingly we managed it with little strain. You end up above the treetops where the view is breathtaking. It’s possible to even see Lake Erie.

What can I say? Beautiful! A great time was had by all!
